The
Widows/Widowers of Deceased Veterans Foundation provides our communities with a
“one-stop” service of financial, health care, and spiritual needs related to
being a widow or widower of a deceased veteran. All of their basic needs can be
cared for by persons who understand and are trained in their area of expertise.
We intend, as an organization, to be the leading agency dealing with widows and
widowers of deceased veterans—both medically and non-medically.

Foundation Profile
This organization began with one minister, Rev. Daisy
Walden, providing assistance to a deceased veteran's wife. She desperately
needed the financial assistance that could not be provided from the many places
she had tried. Rev. Walden, through her tenacity, found more than $7000.00
needed by this wife of a deceased veteran to prevent foreclosure on her home.
We are the Widows of Deceased Veterans Foundation. We were formed on September
24, 2004 after an enlightening battle regarding the foreclosure on the home of a
seventy two year old widow of a deceased American veteran.
This widow owed approximately $7,200 in delinquent payments on her home which
was in foreclosure. She and her deceased military husband had owned the home for
more than 25 years. Because, of her situation a friend took her to the local
Veterans Affairs Office (VA) for Florence County SC. to inquire as to if she was
eligible for benefits as a surviving spouse. After the VA officer did his
research, he discovered that she was not eligible for survivor’s benefits. The
VA officer who is the Director of the Veterans Affairs for the county, Richard
Walden is also the spouse of the Founder and CEO of this organization, After Mr.
Walden realized that the widow was not eligible for benefits he called Ms.
Walden because of her extensive years of experience in real estate and banking
and told her of this widow’s plight. Ms Walden took a personal interest, with
only one week left for the bank to complete the foreclosure process on the
widow’s property.
Ms. Walden, through her experience and efforts was able to raise the $7,200
needed to stop the foreclosure of the deceased veteran widows’ home within three
(3) minutes of the deadline the bank had given before it would be too late to
stop the foreclosure.
After this near foreclosure of this deceased veterans widow home, Ms. Walden was
very surprise to discover that if the deceased veteran did not invest in a
survivor’s benefit program or his death was not as a result of a service
connected disability, the surviving spouse if receiving social security most
often is not eligible for any benefits through VA. Ms. Walden, saw the severity
of the situation that exist today with our widows and widowers of deceased
American veterans and how everything that they took years to build, could be
gone in just a matter of minutes. Hence, Widows of Deceased Veterans Foundation
was born.
The staff is comprised strictly of volunteers who believe that we must serve
those who embraced our soldiers to maintain the freedom that we all cherish.
